Chimney Construction & Chimney lining service:

Before installing a wood burning, multi fuel or gas stove or cooker, it is necessary to investigate the integrity of the chimney. A chimney liner is sometimes required to ensure safe usage of your appliance, by preventing carbon monoxide leaking into other rooms of your property and your neighbors.

Our qualified HETAS surveyor will visually inspect the chimney if possible and carry out a smoke test during their survey. At the same time they will discuss your requirement for any alterations you may wish to make to the fireplace and advise you which stove would be suitable. Our surveys are carried out free of charge.

If the chimney proves to be sound then we would not necessarily advise lining although it does  increase the efficiency and performance of the flue and reduces the build-up of tar, (provided the wood used is seasoned) which is a potential fire hazard. A wood  or multi fuel stove can be up to 80% efficient in comparison to open fires which might be as low as 20%. When the stove is not in use if the air intakes are closed on the stove this prevents heat from the radiators being lost up the chimney.

As your chimney ages, regular maintenance and repair are recommended to ensure all combustion gases and fumes, including Carbon Monoxide, are extracted safely and your chimney remains efficient and robust. We recommend the chimney be swept at least once a year by a NACS qualified chimney sweep.
